Strike Continues Even If Federal Government pays February and March Salaries

ASUU – The Academic Staff  Union of Universities  has declared that its strike will continue despite the president’s order that in February and March 2020 teachers’ salaries be withheld at federal universities. The Federal Government had previously withheld teachers’ salaries for their refusal to register in the Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System.
According to ASUU National President Prof. Abiodun Ogunyemi, the speakers would not resume work because the strike was not just over IPPIS; however, the payment of wages will pave the way for a meaningful dialogue with the Federal Government.
The ASUU President said that paying the speakers was not a favor, adding that “the members worked in February and we continued working in March before the coronavirus pandemic broke out. A worker is expected to be paid his salary. Even as we speak, people are supposed to be prepared to receive their April salary. ”
Professor Abiodun also frowned and rejected the FG’s demand that teachers submit their bank verification numbers (BVN) as part of the conditions for payment of their February and March salaries. He previously said that ASUU members were paid without asking for their BVN, so the union suspects this is an indirect way of returning ASUU to IPPIS.
